MPLT20 Cricket Tournament

by on 29 October 2013

18th Feb 2013, was a Historic day for the Memon’s all over the world, as Mr A.C.Saleem VP WMO Far East Chapter accompanied Captain of Far East Team Rizwan Gulam Bhoja and Captain of Europe Team Mohamed Ali Mohamed (Jonty) for the toss for the 1st ever Memon T20 International Match at the Sinhalese Sports Club Grounds (SSC) in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

While the first ball of the Tournament was bowled on 18th Feb, the ball started rolling for the MPL long before. The Brainchild and Passion of Far East VP A.C. Saleem, the original idea was mooted by him during a discussions among the VP’s of all the Chapters during the 10th AGM held in London in June’12. This was subsequently followed up with a proposal from the WMO Far East Chapter to the Executive Committee of the WMO, which was met with some scepticism and apprehension but was nevertheless approved at the Exco Conference call on 9th Oct 2012

4 months to organize an International Sporting Event is no easy task, made all the more difficult by the fact that none of the Organizers had ever done anything remotely similar to this. An Organizing Committee (OC) of 11, with the VP as Chairman was formed with the blessing of the 3 Far East Trustees and the preparation for the MPL began in earnest

The members of the OC were assigned specific tasks and Thursday weekly meetings were held to review progress and decision making

1. A.C. Saleem – Chairman, Funding and Player accommodation
2. Aslam Sattar – Secretary, Uniforms and Souvenir
3. Majeed Kareem – Treasurer and Finance
4. Shahid Sangani – Liaison with all other Chapters + WMO Officials
5. Anjum Asmath – Grounds, Rules/Regulations and liaison with Sri Lanka Cricket, Umpires and Grounds
6. Altaf Ismail – Printing & Trophies
7. Nasir Latif – Food and Refreshments
8. Saeed Mullah – Gala Dinner, Other events, and PR
9. Munnawar Mullah – Transportation
10. Kadeem Bhoja – Local Logistics and Grounds
11. Capt Ameen Mohamed – Score Board

No detail was too small for the OC to discuss, all suggestions were considered with open mind. While there were disagreements and arguments, all was done in a good Team Sprite with the total focus to host A World Class T20 Tournament and set a Benchmark not only for MPL but for any WMO event.

Suggestions were called from all the Chapters for a “MPL Logo” and an entry from Pakistan Chapter was adopted as the Official Logo for the MPL.
